Job Design

Today's job of operations manager is complex because he/she has to manage all employees and workers involved in the production of goods and services. For operational managers, managing people is challenging because of differences in culture, education, attitude, and belief of the employees. All these  require frequent restructuring of organization without minimizing quality of goods and services. In order to manage people effectively, operations manager should develop effective designs, standards, and measurement of jobs for them.

One of the best ways used for increasing productivity of an organization is job design. It is a technique to structure the job of workers to adjust physical and behavioral needs of workers and employees. For this purpose, work measurement method is used to determine the most effecient means for working the task of each employee in reasonable set of standards. Employees can be motivated in different ways but operations manager can structure a job not only for motivating the employees but also reinforce them to the most important aspects of the job.

Job refers a group of interrelated activities or tasks, which needs to perform for achieving organization objectives. A group of jobs is called department, departments are grouped on the basis of nature of function like production/operations department, marketing department, finance department, etc. Job design is the process of specifying the content of activities of each job and determining how it is distributed within organization. In the words, Job design may be defined as the function of specifying volume of works or activities of an individual or group in an organizational setting. Its objective is to develop job structures that meet the requirements of the organization and its technology and that satisfy jobholder's personal and individual requirements.

The objectives of job design are as follows:
- Technical feasibility
- Economic feasibility
- Physical feasibility.
